Hi the names Ramus and i am a newbie to both this forum and the web so here to pick your brains

To begin i have a very large cardboard box which contains all and more content that i need for a web site. Getting the info from the box into my computer and onto a web page is not an impossible task thankfully but from there on i am lost. A php could be a qualification and as for what i am actually paying a web host for is a mystery so will rely very much on trust!!!

The site will be built with one of the widely available software package but prob not front page (any ideas for a dummy)and will be an info/resource site.

Online purchasing will be available but i require this to be done through a secure request form and email and see how it goes.

I would like to have a Question /Answer section, not a forum as such but more of a notice board (any ideas)
Although it is not going to be Amazon to begin with,it will be quite graphic intensive so maybe 2gb transfer would be a good start, disk space is one thing i do have an idea about 50mb is a lot 250mb is for number hungry people.

Domain names, i have 1 but will hopefully get 4 more, i understand that it is a good option to buy from another source other than your web host (?) Where do u recommend i go for domains?? Assuming i get 1 free with hosting i will still want 2x.info 1x.co.uk.

I would like each domain to point to the site but at least 2 should have their own page on the main site and all email end up at 1 account as well as its own is this possible ??

Email, to get it direct to my computer i think i need a pop thingy is this correct and what is it, will this have virus protection or is that something i need to look at my end.

What is and will i need a static ip address,i ask as i see them mentioned on web host pages and i am just about to decide on a broadband isp who also mention it.

Lastly backups, who and how is this done dont want to lose my efforts as they disappear down the cable.


Think thats it, if you could help with these questions and sugest hosts that could help i would be obliged. I think it is worth mensioning that where there are hundreds of guides to web hosting with loads of info none could answer these questions consicely. This string could end up being a good starting point written by people who have the experience for others not just myself.
